What are the methods of fiber testing?

Fiber test methods are used to evaluate the characteristics and performance of fiber materials to ensure that they meet specific industry standards and requirements. Here are some common fiber testing methods:


1. Fiber strength test:

    - Single fiber strength test: Using a universal tensile testing machine, the fiber sample is fixed between two clamps, and a tensile force is applied until the fiber breaks. The test results are expressed as the load at which the fiber breaks.

    - Fiber bundle strength test: Put a sample composed of multiple fiber bundles into a tensile testing machine and apply tensile force for testing. The test results are expressed as the load at which the fiber bundle breaks.

    - Fiber elongation test: A tensile test is used to measure the amount of elongation of the fiber before breaking to evaluate the ductility and flexibility of the fiber.


2. Fiber diameter and thickness test:

    - Optical microscopy: Use a microscope to observe the cross-sectional shape of the fiber and measure the fiber diameter.

    - Image processing technology: analyze the fiber image through image processing software to obtain fiber diameter data.

    - Airflow Fineness Meter: Measuring the diameter and thickness of fibers using air flow.


3. Fiber length test:

    - Instrument method: Use a fiber length meter or fiber observer to observe and measure fiber samples to obtain fiber length data.

    - Optical microscope method: observe the end or cut-off surface of the fiber, and measure the fiber length by visual inspection or image processing software.


4. Fiber softness test:

    - Fiber softness meter: used to measure the ability of fibers to bend or deform under a certain pressure to evaluate the softness and bending deformation properties of fibers.

5. Fiber hygroscopicity test:

    - Humidity resistance test: Expose fiber samples to a high humidity environment to measure their moisture absorption and humidity changes; or place fibers in water to evaluate their durability and performance in water.


6. Fiber heat resistance test:

    - Hot pressing test: place the fiber sample under high temperature and high pressure conditions, and observe its melting, discoloration, deformation, etc. to evaluate the thermal stability and heat resistance of the fiber.


7. Fiber abrasion resistance test:

    - Abrasion Test: Abrasion test is performed on fibers using an abrasion testing instrument such as Martindale Abraser to measure the abrasion resistance and durability of fibers.


These test methods only list some common fiber test methods, and the specific test methods and standard requirements will vary according to fiber types, application fields and specification requirements. When selecting a test method, the applicable test method should be determined according to specific requirements and standard specifications.
